One day, Emperor Akbar was sitting in his court, engaging in interesting discussions with his courtiers as usual. At that moment, a curiosity arose in his mind. He decided to test the intelligence of his courtiers.
He looked at everyone and said, “I have three questions. Whoever answers them correctly will receive a special reward.”
The courtiers eagerly asked, “Your Majesty, what are the questions?”
Akbar spoke in a serious tone:
1. What is the biggest thing in the world?
2. How many stars are there in the sky?
3. Where is the center of the Earth?
The court fell silent. All the courtiers began thinking. The questions seemed simple but were actually quite difficult.
First Question: What is the Biggest Thing in the World?
The first minister replied, “Your Majesty, the biggest thing is our palace. It is vast and beautiful.”
Another courtier said, “No, the biggest thing is our kingdom, which stretches far and wide.”
A third courtier added, “No, Your Majesty, the biggest thing is the Earth itself, on which we all live.”
Akbar was not satisfied with any of these answers. He turned to Birbal and asked, “Birbal, what do you think?”
Birbal smiled and said, “Your Majesty, the biggest thing in the world is human thought.”
Akbar curiously asked, “How so?”
Birbal replied, “Our thoughts are limitless. We can imagine the entire universe through our minds. It is through thought that humans have made the impossible possible. Therefore, thought is the biggest thing in the world.”
Akbar was impressed with Birbal’s answer and moved on to the next question.
Second Question: How Many Stars Are There in the Sky?
Akbar then asked the second question, “How many stars are there in the sky?”
The courtiers began whispering among themselves. Some tried to guess numbers, but all their answers were incorrect.
Akbar turned to Birbal and said, “Birbal, you answer this.”
Birbal smiled and asked for a sheep to be brought into the court. He then said, “Your Majesty, the number of stars in the sky is equal to the number of hairs on this sheep’s body.”
Akbar was surprised and asked, “Can you prove this?”
Birbal humbly replied, “If anyone wants to count, they can count the hairs on this sheep one by one. If they can do it, I will accept that I was wrong. But until someone counts them, my answer remains correct.”
Akbar was once again impressed by Birbal’s intelligence and smiled. Now, he moved on to the third question.
Third Question: Where is the Center of the Earth?
Akbar asked the third question, “Birbal, can you tell me where the center of the Earth is?”
No one in the court could answer this question. The courtiers were confused because the Earth is vast, and finding its exact center seemed impossible.
Birbal took a wooden stick and placed it into the ground, then said, “Your Majesty, this is the center of the Earth.”
Akbar was astonished and asked, “How can you say that?”
Birbal replied, “Your Majesty, if you think this is not the center of the Earth, then call someone who can measure and prove that it is wrong. But until someone disproves it, this remains the center.”
Akbar laughed and said, “Birbal, you are truly amazing! No one can match your intelligence!”
After this, Akbar rewarded Birbal with precious gifts, and the entire court praised his wisdom.
