The Linguist Akbar Birbal Story In English

One day, a stranger arrived at Akbar’s court. He was multilingual. He claimed that he could speak many languages and that it was impossible to identify his mother tongue.

Akbar loved challenges. He told his courtiers, “If anyone can identify this man’s mother tongue, they will be rewarded.”

The courtiers asked the man to speak in different languages. He spoke fluently in all—Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Turkish, Gujarati, Punjabi, and many others.

Now, the problem was: which language was his mother tongue? He spoke every language so well that it was difficult to tell.

Akbar looked at Birbal and said, “Birbal, can you identify this man’s mother tongue?”

Birbal smiled and replied, “Give me just one night. Tomorrow, I will tell you his mother tongue.”

That night, when the man was in deep sleep, Birbal quietly entered his room. He gently poured cold water near his ear and shouted loudly:

“Snake! Snake!”

The man suddenly woke up in fear and, in panic, screamed in a particular language.

Birbal smiled and left.

The next day, everyone gathered in the court. Akbar asked, “Birbal, did you identify this man’s mother tongue?”

Birbal replied, “Yes, Your Majesty. When he was in deep sleep, I scared him. In his panic, the first language he spoke is his mother tongue.”

Akbar looked at the man and asked, “Is this true?”

The man smiled and bowed his head in acceptance. “Yes, Your Majesty, Birbal has identified my mother tongue.”

Akbar was very pleased with Birbal’s wisdom and said, “Birbal, you are truly very clever. How did you figure it out?”

Birbal answered, “Your Majesty, no matter how many languages a person learns, in moments of crisis or deep emotion, they instinctively speak the language closest to their heart—that is, their mother tongue.”
