Stephen Leacock (1869–1944) was a renowned Canadian humorist, writer, and academic, celebrated for his witty and satirical works. Born in Swanmore, England, he emigrated with his family to Ontario, Canada, at the age of six. Leacock graduated from the University of Toronto and later earned a doctorate in political science and economics from the University of Chicago.
Despite his academic career, Leacock gained fame for his literary talents, producing over 30 books of essays, sketches, and fiction. His humor was rooted in keen social observation, blending wit with gentle mockery. His most famous work, “Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town” (1912), is a charming collection of interconnected stories set in the fictional town of Mariposa, a satirical portrayal of small-town life in Canada.
