Oscar Wilde Biography
Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish poet, playwright, and novelist renowned for his wit, flamboyant style, and keen social commentary. Born on October 16, 1854, in Dublin, Ireland, Wilde was the son of Sir William Wilde, a prominent surgeon, and Jane Wilde, a poet and nationalist. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and later at Oxford University, Wilde excelled in classical studies and developed a deep appreciation for art and literature.
Wilde’s sharp intellect and unique sense of aesthetics quickly established him as a leading figure in the Aesthetic Movement. His works often challenged Victorian norms and celebrated beauty, individuality, and decadence. Some of his most celebrated works include the novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” and plays such as “The Importance of Being Earnest”, “An Ideal Husband” and “Lady Windermere’s Fan”. His writing is known for its biting satire, brilliant epigrams, and exploration of complex moral issues.
Wilde’s life took a dramatic turn in 1895 when he was imprisoned for “gross indecency” due to his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas. He spent two years in hard labor, an experience that deeply affected him, leading to the creation of “De Profundis”, a long letter reflecting on his life, and “The Ballad of Reading Gaol”, a poignant poem on prison life.
After his release, Wilde lived in exile in France, where he died on November 30, 1900, in Paris. Today, Wilde is celebrated as a literary genius and a pioneer who challenged societal norms with unparalleled wit and courage.
