One day, Emperor Akbar was sitting in his court. His court was filled with wise ministers, scholars, and courtiers. Suddenly, an idea came to his mind. He asked Birbal,
“Birbal, can a person stand in freezing water for an entire night?”
Birbal smiled and replied, “Yes, Your Majesty. It is possible. If someone has strong willpower, they can endure the cold.”
Akbar was surprised to hear this. He thought that standing in freezing water all night was impossible. So, he challenged Birbal, “If you can find someone who can do this and succeed, I will reward him. But if he fails, you will be punished.”
Birbal accepted the challenge.
Birbal left the court and went into the streets of the city. He spoke to many people, but no one was ready to stand in the cold water for the whole night. Then, he found a poor man who was very hardworking and honest but struggling financially.
Birbal said to him, “If you can stand in this freezing pond for the entire night, the emperor will reward you.”
The poor man had no other choice. He desperately needed money, so he accepted the challenge.
At night, the man stepped into the pond. The cold was unbearable, and the water was as freezing as ice, but he remained strong. The whole night, he shivered, but with determination and courage, he did not give up. He saw the glowing lights of the palace from a distance and kept himself motivated, thinking that he would get his reward in the morning.
In the morning, Akbar and his courtiers arrived at the pond. The poor man was still standing in the water.
Akbar asked him, “How did you manage to stand in the freezing cold all night?”
The poor man replied, “Your Majesty, I kept looking at the glowing light of the palace. That light gave me hope and kept me going.”
Akbar thought that the man was getting warmth from the palace light, so he said,
“You did not truly endure the cold. The palace light gave you warmth, so you will not receive any reward.”
Hearing this, the poor man was heartbroken. He had spent the entire night in hardship, but he received nothing.
Birbal could not tolerate this injustice, but he did not say anything immediately. He decided to make Akbar realize his mistake.
The next day, Birbal did not come to court. When Akbar asked about him, he was told that Birbal was cooking khichdi at home.
Hearing this, Akbar was surprised. He thought, “Why is Birbal taking so long to cook khichdi?”
Akbar decided to see for himself. When he reached Birbal’s house, he saw that Birbal had planted a very tall pole. A pot was hanging at the top of the pole. A small fire was burning on the ground far below the pot.
Akbar was shocked to see this and asked, “Birbal, what are you doing? The pot is so high, and the fire is so low. How will the khichdi cook?”
Birbal smiled and replied,
“Your Majesty, if the palace light could provide warmth to that poor man, then this fire can also cook my khichdi.”
Akbar immediately realized his mistake. He understood that he had been unfair to the poor man.
Akbar immediately summoned the poor man to the court and gave him a generous reward. He praised Birbal’s wisdom and said,
“Birbal, once again, you have proven what true intelligence is. It is the duty of a king to deliver justice, and today, you have made me realize my mistake.”
The poor man was very happy and thanked Birbal.
