Shakur Mirza was a selfish and arrogant man. He wanted Akbar to trust only him and dismiss Birbal from his court. He tried many times but always failed due to Birbal’s cleverness. Then he devised a very devious plan.
One day, Shakur Mirza said to Akbar,
“Your Majesty, I’ve always heard that Birbal is very wise, but can he answer this question—what is the greatest punishment in the world?”
Akbar summoned Birbal and posed the same question.
Birbal smiled and replied, “Your Majesty, the greatest punishment is one that breaks a person’s pride and makes them feel helpless.”
Shakur Mirza laughed and said, “That is no answer! This must be proven!”
Birbal thought for a moment and said, “Your Majesty, I need some time to demonstrate the answer to this question.”
Akbar granted permission. Birbal immediately devised a plan.
The next day, Birbal announced in the court, “To test Shakur Mirza’s intelligence, His Majesty has bestowed upon him a special honor. For the next three days, he will act as the biggest beggar in the city!”
Hearing this, Shakur Mirza’s face turned pale. He protested, but Akbar said, “This is just a test. Can’t you even endure this?”
Shakur was forced to accept the challenge.
For the next three days, Shakur Mirza roamed the city as a beggar. The people who once respected him now scorned him. He neither received good food nor respect. People recognized him and laughed at him, and even the courtiers mocked him.
On the third day, he came to the court in a miserable state—his clothes were dirty, his eyes were filled with tears, and his pride was completely shattered.
Akbar asked, “Now tell us, what is the greatest punishment?”
Shakur Mirza bowed his head and said, “Your Majesty, the greatest punishment is one that breaks a person’s pride and makes them feel helpless.”
Birbal smiled and said, “Your Majesty, that was the answer I gave earlier, but it was necessary to prove it.”
Akbar praised Birbal and warned Shakur Mirza not to plot against him again.
Instead of learning from his first defeat, Shakur devised a new plan. He planned to steal a valuable necklace and falsely accuse Birbal of theft.
Shakur announced in the court, “Your Majesty, a priceless necklace from your treasury has been stolen, and I suspect Birbal is the thief.”
Akbar didn’t believe it but ordered an investigation. Birbal, too, realized the conspiracy. He declared in the court, “Your Majesty, if you give me ten minutes, I will identify the thief myself.”
Akbar granted permission.
Birbal called all the servants of the court and handed each of them a stick. He said, “These are magical sticks. The stick of the thief will grow one inch longer by morning.”
Frightened, the real thief, whom Shakur had sent, cut his stick slightly out of fear.
The next day, when Birbal checked the length of all the sticks, he found that one servant’s stick was shorter than the others. Birbal immediately declared, “Your Majesty, this is the thief!”
Upon strict interrogation, the servant confessed that Shakur Mirza had orchestrated the theft. Akbar became furious and ordered punishment for Shakur. However, Birbal said,
“Your Majesty, the real punishment would be to strip him of all responsibilities and ensure that no one trusts his decisions anymore.”
Akbar agreed with Birbal’s suggestion and banished Shakur Mirza from the court.
